 Jen Potter (DClinPsy)

Clinical Psychologist
Jen has always had a passion for working with those who have experienced trauma and multiple disadvantages and has over a decade’s experience of working in the NHS, the private sector and in partnership with third sector organisations. Jen has experiences of working across the life span including children, adults, and those with learning and physical disabilities.

Jen has experience of working across the full spectrum of mental health needs and tailors her approach to suit the needs of individuals and services. Jen’s experience is broad and diverse. She has extensive experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers, those experiencing rough sleeping and homelessness, domestic violence, survivors of torture, those who use substance and those with a history of offending.

Jen takes an integrative approach to her work, drawing on her knowledge of a variety of models including community psychology, psychodynamic and attachment-based models such as Mentalisation Based treatment (MBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) and Schema therapy. Jen is also experienced in delivering Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness approaches.

Jen also has a sound understanding of neuropsychology. Jen’s work with those who have experienced trauma, discrimination and disadvantage means that she draws upon her theoretical knowledge in order to develop formulations which validate distress and helps individuals and teams understand the context within which distress has developed, how it affects an individual and the things that might support them to feel differently at an individual and systemic level.

Jen also has experience of working at an organisational level. She has extensive experience of working indirectly to create environments within teams that are trauma informed and supporting services to create Psychologically Informed Environments (PIEs) that are designed to include those that are typically excluded from mainstream services. Jen has experiences of supervising a range of professionals, has provided consultation spaces and reflective practice to organisations, and delivered training, teaching on doctoral courses and worked with commissioners to develop inclusive services.

Jen’s experience has given her an understanding of how systemic factors can act as barriers to access and perpetuate problems for those that are most disenfranchised. This has led to a passion for social justice a focus on using her experience of clinical work, indirect work with systems and training to contribute structural and systemic change within the field of trauma and multiple disadvantages.
