How BGPS got startedMy name is Brett and I come from a rural farming background, but have lived and worked in London for most of my adult life. For the last five years I have lived in Orpington, Kent.
During the first decade of this century I worked in front-line homeless services, initially as a project worker in a hostel for men with dependent drinking problems, then as a street outreach worker in North Westminster and latterly as the manager of a street outreach team. Alongside this I studied for my Masters and Doctorate in Counselling Psychology part-time, qualifying in 2008. Since qualifying I have worked in an NHS addictions service and two central London IAPT (working with common mental health problems such as depression and anxiety) services as a clinician and manager, as well as growing my own training and consultancy business. My own business started out in 2008 facilitating two group clinical supervision sessions a month for front-line workers at the organisation where I had been previously employed. Over the past eight years this has grown, mainly by word of mouth, and at the time of writing we have the privilege of working with over twenty different organisations offering a range of services from training, consultancy, reflective practice groups, 1:1 therapy and clinical supervision to the development of psychological stabilisation programmes for hostel residents. I work with a variety of client groups including people with a history of rough sleeping, prison leavers and veterans. I feel passionately about creating hope and positive change for people who have lacked opportunity and been marginalised by society and working to reverse the pernicious effects of early trauma on individuals and communities. My areas of expertise include consultancy, supervision and training and the psychological treatment of trauma, including complex trauma, depression, anxiety disorders, bereavement and loss. I have completed post-doctoral training in Compassion Focused Therapy, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy and EMDR which complement my core training in CBT and Psychodynamic Therapy. Professional MembershipsI am a Chartered Member of the BPS (British Psychological Society), a Registered Professional with the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) and a BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) Accredited CBT Therapist.
